About the artwork

Painter Jakub Špaňhel created a painting inspired by significant Ostrava architecture especially for the sixth edition of the Ostrava Beach Open tournament. Špaňhel, a native of Karviná, has been fascinated by the industrial landscape since childhood. The inspiration for this painting was primarily the building of the architect Josef Pleskot, the Bolt Tower, towering above the original blast furnace.

Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Jakub is the personification of a painter who freely lets colors and light speak. His paintings have an inner charge coming from abstracted reality: he can present it convincingly and contemporary, he can get to the essence of figures, landscapes and architecture without being descriptive or literal. It makes visible what is not visible at first glance, opens the door to another reality and leaves it up to the viewer how far they dare to venture into it.
